A few things to know about the Prunus Serrulata Amanogawa options. Multi-stem means it starts to branch out very low to the ground. Standard form means it has a lollipop shape i.e. a much longer clear stem with a rounded crown on top. Rootball means it comes with the roots wrapped and not on a container.

Girth measurements are very approximate. Even the same batch of trees can have wildly variable heights. Those that we have given are as a guideline only.

Flagpole Cherry Tree Prunus Serrulata Amanogawa
Prunus Amanogawa aka Flagpole Cherry Tree, as its name implies is a narrow upright cherry tree ideal for restricted spaces and by that we mean small gardens and parks and not MOD property or MI5/6 grounds. It would be no good for spies that like gardening because the tall upright nature makes it a poor choice to hide behind.

With the RHS Award Of Garden Merit, you can be sure this tree has some outstanding features such as the fragrant double light pink flowers. If we are to be accurate they are described as a
mild fragrance which is another way of saying you have to sniff hard to smell them so make sure there are no flies nearby.

Its young leaves are bronze-green colour in early spring, turning green in summer. Should you want a different colour then you could try tinted sunglasses or spray paint.

The double flowers are grouped in dense clusters in April or May. You should easily achieve a 4m x1m shape at 10 years but could reach a final height of around 10m. Could be viewed as much taller if you have lost the first half of your tape measure.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

Planting
Flagpole Cherry Tree Prunus Serrulata Amanogawa
Plant in areas that do not get colder than minus 20 degree centigrade so if you see penguins, there has been a zoo break out or climate change is worse in your area. It will tolerate most soils from sand, loam, clay and chalk. Full sun will get the best results and no need to prune unless dead, diseased or crossing over branches. If you need an emergency Harry Potter wand then we think the tree would survive it but your reputation may not.

Smaller Ornamental Cherry Trees
Other ornamental cherry trees that are described as small, compact, upright, fastigiate, puny, diddly, cute or wee are as follows

Prunus Shosar. 5m x 3m (height x width) at 10 years. RHS Award, pink single (cannot find love) flowers. Chalk/clay tolerant.
Prunus Snow Goose. 3m x 2m (height x width) at 10 years. Single white flowers, chalk/clay tolerant
Prunus Litigiosa. (Tassel Cherry). 3m x 1.5m (height x width) at 10 years. White/pink tinged flowers and protruding anthers (dangly bits in the middle that look like thick cotton)

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.

Fruit On Ornamental Cherry Trees
