Acer Cappadocicim Aureum, Golden Caucasian Maple Tree
Planting the Golden Caucasian Maple tree in your garden is like having a very slow operating set of traffic lights. The very young foliage is a striking red (attention-getting not refusing to work for better conditions). These quickly turn a bright yellow and in the summer a pleasing green. Come autumn, they turn back to yellow. The yellows make an excellent contrast to dark foliage such as that found on Acer Rubrum which we coincidentally also sell. The wide range of colours is very pleasing unless you see them in your urine stream.

We asked the growers if it was accurate to describe the Acer Cappadocicim Aureum as looking like" Dwayne The Rock" Johnson" because their catalogue said strong and bold to which they replied, "bold not bald". They hung up when we asked if that meant we had to use thicker letters when describing it e.g. bold.

The distinctive large 5 lobed leaves are very distinctive and have more than 4 lobes and less than 6 and are big. If you look up into the tree canopy for long enough and see foliage that blocks your view, a leaf probably landed on your face.

The flowers are described as small and yellow but if you find any that are very different from that then the neighbours probably had an outdoor wedding ceremony and the bride had overdeveloped rear throwing muscles. These turn into reddish fruits (the tree flowers not the bride).

The Acer Cappadocicim Aureum was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding features which is odd because as it is a tree, all the features technically stand outside. They described it as having a beautiful form which we take to be the one it filled in to be considered for the award.

This is a medium tree which doesn't mean it can talk to the dead. It means it will be a 6m tall and 4m wide tree at the ten-year point. It could go on to grow more depending on local conditions but manual pruning can keep it to any size you like except bigger than what it is capable of growing to.

Many tree growers describe it as a good specimen tree which could mean ideal for peeing in a small plastic cup for the doctor. No idea how that works. Maybe the thick foliage and tall branches offer a great deal of privacy and spills won't show on yellow leaves. For most others, this probably means good for public parks, ornamental gardens etc.

Planting Acer Cappadocicim Aureum, Golden Caucasian Maple Tree
Golden Maple trees are considered very easy to grow but it won't like dry soils or very high PH levels.

Plant in almost any soil that is well draining and preferably in partial shade to protect from sun scorch. A sheltered spot will get you the best results.

Pruning Acer Cappadocicim Aureum, Golden Caucasian Maple Tree
Can be hard pruned which describes how much material you take off the tree not how difficult you can make the job e.g. wearing boxing gloves and a blindfold while balancing on the shoulders of your one-legged epileptic mate as you hack randomly with a sword.

If left unpruned, it will form a wide, dense and spreading habit (wide canopy not an addiction to using butter knives)

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
