Large Leaved Lime, Tilia Platyphyllos Cell Grown Tree AKA large leaved Linden or Summer Linden.

A commonly planted tree for ornamental reasons and frequently found in UK parks and gardens growing to around 40m tall and 26m wide. The deciduous foliage is a glossy green and slightly lighter underneath which should tell you if you have planted the tree upside down or not. The rough-feeling underside of the heart-shaped leaves is quite hairy but not enough to practice your hairdressing skills on. These grow to around 6-12cm and turn a distinctive yellow in the Autumn which the Large Leaved Lime reaches before many other trees. It is considered long-lived compared to similar trees and near-immortal compared to the attention span of a toddler. The fragrant flowers are yellow-green and self-pollinate, growing into 1cm wide or less smooth oval fruits with pointy tips.

The natural structure of the tree is a vase-like shape with the branches growing up and out. Brown-red stems develop into dark grey bark with fine bumpy peaks and toughs which might remind you of your grandparents.

The Large Leaved Lime has darker bark than the Small Leaved Lime which does not happen because it was sunbathing longer. It also does not produce suckers near the base of the tree.

Summer fragrant flowers are small and creamy (looks not taste) and attract a lot of insects. These provide a large food source for wildlife (insects/birds not apex predators) and none of the tree is considered toxic to humans or animals.

Planting Large Leaved Lime Tilia Platyphyllos
Will tolerate most soil types including heavy clay and is considered pollution tolerant. Will thrive best in chalk/alkaline conditions and hardy down to minus 28 degrees centigrade. Not a good choice for coastal planting. Plant in full sun or partial shade which describes the planting location and not the weather on the day of digging the hole.

Pruning Large Leaved Lime Tilia Platyphyllos
Can be pruned hard or pollarded. Pruned hard means removing lots of material in one go and not dressing like Rambo.

Possibly Interesting Information About Large Leaved Lime Tilia platyphyllos
They are often found in the south-west of England in soils rich in lime and also behind signs that say "Large Leaved Lime, Tilia Platyphyllos".
It is known that Estonians and Latvians consider this tree to be linked to fertility. It is a rumour (started by us) that they used the smaller twigs as penis splints.
The Germans associated it with fairness and justice which probably means they whipped offenders with it.
The wood does not warp which means it is no good for building faster than light spaceships.
You can make a tea from the flowers but if you have enough of them, we are sure you can make any letter of the alphabet.
You can make wine from the tree sap just by saying "whine" in a long drawn-out, grating and monotonal voice as you extract the tree juice.
Fossils from Turkey have shown Larged Leaved Lime goes back to the Pilocene age which we think describes a time when plasticine and pillows were popular.
Historically, the wood has been burned to make fire which promotes less clothing and therefore population increase.

Delivery
Due to courier unpredictability, we advise having your trees delivered AT LEAST 3 days before you actually need them.

Returning Cell Grown Trees

For Phytosanitary reasons, cell grown trees cannot be returned to the nursery.

Delaying Planting Cell Grown Trees
If you cannot plant straight away, take the trees out of the packaging and stand upright next to each other in a sheltered location outside. November to March, no need to water unless they start to dry out and these would be ok for up to 6 weeks. During Spring and Summer, you can do this for up to 3 weeks.

Site Conditions And Evergreen Tree List
Our tree chart details which site conditions suit which trees and also which are evergreen or semi-evergreen.

Feeding Or Fertilizing Hedges
This is a task that can easily be over done. Any nitrogen based fertilizer will do such as 20:20:10 but the longer lasting ones which take 18/24 months are better as they are regulated by the weather and moisture therefore release slowly.

Woodburning Chart
If you are one of those lucky people that lead an eco lifestyle (VERY jealous if you are) and want to buy trees to burn, then maybe our wood burning chart (excel spread sheet) will help you decide. Ash, Eucalyptus Gunnii and Willow are worth looking at for their growth rates and calorific values.

Planting Tool
If you are looking to plant lots of plug plant or cell grown trees (the 10-40cm-ish) size range then maybe you should consider our tree planting tool. Tree planting rates of over 700 per day achievable.

Adding A Bit Of Colour And Attract Wildlife
Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) is very attractive, fragrant and attracts more wildlife to your garden. A bit on the vigorous side but worth the effort. A great addition to your project.

Tree Spacing
Broadleaf wood planting would be around 3m between each tree. Christmas tree planting for a commercial crop is around 1m.

Factors Detrimental To Cell Grown Trees
Too much/little water, animal Urine, excessive wind exposure (will slow growth), salt spray, frost on new growth, herbicide drift and over application of fertilizer.

UK Grown Volume Trees
All our volume trees are UK grown and as far as we know because we have never caught one booking a holiday overseas.
