Mirabelle De Nancy
A yellow-orange fruit with green tinges and red spots, a sort of "spent a night painting the town red" look. A sweet and juicy Mirabelle, it can be eaten as a dessert fruit or in cooking and is very popular in French dishes. We assume this means used a lot in French recipes and not just left lying about in French porcelain. The growers tell us it can be made into many other dishes but so far we have found clay fired in a kiln to give best results.

You pay for the tree, leaves, bark and roots and get the stone in the middle of the fruits free. This is what we take "freestone" to mean. Many have tried to convince us it means the stone separates easily from the fruit flesh and can be rolled away but if that was the case, it would be called "Rolling Stone".

Technically the De Nancy is self-fertile meaning it will produce fruit without a pollination partner however fruit yields should be improved by having a different Mirabelle species in the same or similar pollination group nearby. The De Nancy is in group 1 of 5 so flowers early in the season meaning you will need a different Mirabelle in group 1 or 2. Most other plums and gages in the appropriate flowering group will also cross-pollinate. The warmer the location, the earlier it will flower and fruit. Although reasonably frost resistant, you may get less than ideal yields if you have a harsh frost during flowering periods.

Expect a full flush of fruit between 2 and 5 years which will have a slight pink tinge when ready. Be aware that heavy yields can snap branches. You can either support the branch or remove some of the smaller fruits early in the development stage. This is a judgement call on your part.

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.

Important Mirabelle Fruit Tree information
Just like many other stone fruits such as Plum, Damsons and Gages, Mirabelle fruit trees do not winter (Oct to Mar) very well if left in their containers outside. The smaller thermal mass and faster drying out issues of a small container can generate problems for the tree to include absence of life or death or just not playing anymore depending on how you want to look at it. If you want to keep the Mirabelle tree in a container, we advise moving to a conservatory or greenhouse.

Plum Tree Pollination
Technically speaking it is possible to use plum trees to pollinate Mirabelle plum trees but has more risk than using another Mirabelle plum tree. If the Mirabelle is self-fertile, this of course is not an issue.
