The white fruited, Red-Barked Dogwood (Cornus alba) is a fast-growing, native, British, relatively disease resistant ground cover species. Differing from our other Red-Barked Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea), which have small black berries, this Dogwood has appealing small white berries, which are preceded by pretty, small fragrant white flowers in May or June (must be female as they won't commit to a definite time). As with the other Dogwood, wintertime is when it is at its most showy, as when the leaves have fallen, red-orange stems are revealed. The best colours are revealed when planted in a moist and full sun position however reasonable results can be had from partial shade. Temporarily putting your Red Barked Dogwood tree onto a sun while spraying vigorously with a plant sprayer bed will not make up for you planting it in shade e.g. inside the shed!
Our Red Barked Dogwood trees are considered fully hardy for the UK weather which means they should withstand temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees centigrade. This does not mean they will tolerate extreme flooding for weeks on end, just in case any of you below sea level customers expect us to honour the tree warranty after your garden has been washed away...we do offer unlimited sympathy though.
Expect a height and spread of 2m.
Pruning hard in early Spring before bud break produces an excellent display of winter stems but at the cost of next years flowering. Cut back the previous years growth leaving 2 buds on the previous years growth. Best to leave unpruned the first year of planting
Benefits of using our plug plant trees
Our Dogwood ground cover trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March). All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment.
See What Our Customers Are Saying About Our Red Barked Dogwood Trees:
Dear Alan,My experience of ordering from Trees Oneline has been most positive. The Red Dogwood trees arrived in excellent condition (were left as requested in the dustbin by the courier so I did not have to sit around waiting from them to arrive) and the trees have now settled down and are growing well. I have already placed another order and shall be using this service on many more occasions both for my own garden and for our churchyard. The web-site was easy to navigate with excellent information about each tree, and there is a hint of humour which make makes the whole business a little more human. Many thanks, The Reverend David Derrick 1113
Delivery
Due to courier unpredictability, we advise having your trees delivered AT LEAST 3 days before you actually need them.
Returning Cell Grown Trees
For Phytosanitary reasons, cell grown trees cannot be returned to the nursery.
Delaying Planting Cell Grown Trees
If you cannot plant straight away, take the trees out of the packaging and stand upright next to each other in a sheltered location outside. November to March, no need to water unless they start to dry out and these would be ok for up to 6 weeks. During Spring and Summer, you can do this for up to 3 weeks.
Feeding Or Fertilizing
This is a task that can easily be over done. Any nitrogen based fertilizer will do such as 20:20:10 but the longer lasting ones which take 18/24 months are better as they are regulated by the weather and moisture therefore release slowly.
