Our Doyenne Du Comice pear tree provides medium to large fruits that have been described as excellent eating. We could also say they have been described as "the best possible pear tree ever priced at a level you will not find anywhere else" but that was the website owner talking and his opinion could be biased!

The Doyenne Du Comice pear tree has the RHS award of merit so if you value their opinion then buy this pear tree now.

Should you live in a particularly frosty part of the UK then a Doyenne Du Comice pear will be particularly good purchase because it flowers late when the frosts should have gone. Saying that, Doyenne Du Comice is not so great at resisting scab which is likely to occur in wet and windy conditions (west UK) with an infected tree nearby. So if you live in the country or other remote area your chances of picking up pear tree scab are reduced. You can still buy Doyenne Du Commice for urban areas, you just need to keep a close on it and burn all infected leaves and practice good garden hygene e.g. cutting out all diseased material quickly, mulching and feeding the tree. If you are buying one and want to be as prepared as possible read up on "Pear Tree Scab".

As a tip to get the best from Doyenne Du Comice pears, pick when they are green and store in a cold place. Bring them into a warm environment and they should ripen within a couple of days.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

1 Year Maiden Bare Root Trees
If you plant a 1 Year maiden tree and do not prune it at all, it will grow a little more upright and have more clear stem

Which Type Of Pear Tree Rootstock To Choose:

Those in the horticultural business love their technical lingo, so here is something to help you decipher Gobbeldy Gook from the Green Fingered Brigade. Each rootstock description is made up of several terms from one or more of the following:

Cordon            :  Columnar shape and short branches. Ideal for space saving and quick fruiting (possibly first year)
Quince C         :  Will reach approx. 2.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Quince A and Kirchensellar
Quince Eline : Almost identical to Quince C but but has superior cold hardiness.
Quince A         :  Will reach approx. 3.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Kirchensellar
Kirchensaller:  Will reach approx. 6.0+ metres.
Half Standard: Trunk clear of branches for around 1 metre and is traditional tree shaped. Good for gardens e.g. easy mowing and companion planting underneath.
Straight Lead: Much more of a clear trunk than a Half Standard, usually around 2.0 + metres.
Bush            : Pruned so that branches start around 45cm from the ground.
Maiden            : 1-2 years old and unpruned, ideal for shaping into Fan, Espalier, step over etc
Bare Root       :
There is no soil or pot around the roots which are wrapped in a bag and are cheaper than containerised.
1 Year             : Pear Tree will be between 1 and 2 years old
2 Year             : Pear Tree will be between 2 and 3 years old

Fruiting Times For Bare Root Pear Trees
The general rule of thumb with most fruit trees is that the smaller the ultimate height of the tree, the sooner it will bear fruit. Pear trees around 2.5 metres could fruit in 1-2 years whereas those at 6+ metres could be as much as 5 years. Weather can increase or decrease these times.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.
