Cornus Kousa Chinensis is an elegant small dogwood tree. We mean elegance in horticultural terms, not ballroom dancing because trees and tight dresses do not mix.

The long-lasting and large white flowers fade to a pink from June to July and then a sort of earthy brown if you compost them. If you don't, they become what is known in the industry as "distant pink" as the wind blows them next door. These can be cut and presented to your significant other, just remove the birds and squirrels first. The catalogue states that the flowers develop into fruits looking similar to strawberries. If they believe that then they have never seen a red golf ball or swollen testicles before. The fruits will definitely attract the local wildlife but if Golfers and Urologists appear in your garden, tell them they are mistaken.

The female description of its autumn colours would be "rich bronze and crimson" whereas males would describe it as "a rip off as they were green when we purchased it".

It has the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit which means compared to other swollen testicle trees, this one performs better.

Cornus Kousa Chinensis is a bit like your very sunburned partner in bed, definitely does not want to be touched. Don't prune unless it is to remove dead, diseased or crossing over branches. Considered to be a slow-growing tree unless you are a Sloth, then it would be normal growth speed.

Expect a 10-year height of around 3m x 3m. (The first "3m" number refers to the height, the second one to the width, very important you don't get the two mixed up)

Planting Cornus Kousa Chinensis
For best results plant in fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil. It will tolerate shade but that doesn't mean it will survive in the "Dark Side" so no Darth Vader gardeners should buy this. It will tolerate clay and do worse than leave a 1-star review on Trustpilot if you plant in chalk.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
