*Heights are given as a very rough guideline and can have considerable variation based on species and supplier (each nursery experiences different growing conditions) It may even have been pruned before being sent out so we can only guarantee girth. For the (RB)GIrth 18-20cm to (RB)Girth 30-35cm options, heights are extremely variable due to different suppliers and growing locations.
Trees over 5.5m may include a delivery surcharge based on location and species but we will contact you if that is the case.
Once a mature Mature Red Oak Quercus Rubra is over around 200cm/4 years old then girth is the best measure of value for money. For every girth measurement increment e.g. 6-8cm to 8-10cm (roughly 12-18months growth), the canopy will be wider, stronger, bushier and the root system larger as it has experienced 12-18 months growth. You can notice larger root systems with potted versions because the pot size increases with maturity. As a very general rule, each one cm girth measurement represents around 30cm growth but this doesn't apply to slow-growing trees and seems to drop off with maturity. We had a 40cm girth Red Oak with a height of around 700cm which averages out at 17.5cm per year.
Rootball means it will not come in a pot but will have the roots wrapped which you need to remove before planting and are available for delivery only between November and March.
Multistem means several stems starting very low to the ground. Comparing these with the same age Standard and Half Standard, these are typically shorter as growing several stems takes more effort than one stem.
Standard and Half Standard means lollipop shape. There is a more clear stem with a Standard.
Mature Red Oak Quercus Rubra
A deciduous native North American Oak, Red Oak is a real shower of colour in Autumn. One of the most vigorously growing oaks with dark green, finely lobed leaves which change to a glorious colour spectrum of red, yellow and brown before falling during autumn. Not only is this an attractive tree but it also deserves particular merit in its ability to cope with difficult site conditions. Again, as with our other oaks, this tree is suited to a large garden and will attain a final height of around 32m.
Expect Quercus Rubra to attract wildlife such as birds and bees. If you get White Walkers from Game of Thrones in your garden then this is nothing to do with us.
Should you require more than one tree then you may want to look at our WHOLESALE OAK TREE section or click OAK HEDGING for the obvious hedging section.
Planting Red Oak Quercus Rubra

Hardy down to minus 20 degrees centigrade and performs well in full sun or partial shade. Will also tolerate urban pollution so if your street is ever turned into a Monaco style F1 track, your prized Quercus Rubra will be fine.
Pruning Red Oak Quercus Rubra
Occasional pruning will encourage new growth.
What Our Customers Are Saying About Our Red Oak Tree (Quercus rubra)
I shall endeavour to persuade some unsuspecting person to carry out the photographic manoeuvre you suggest. It would be a pleasure to provide a testimonial about the Red Oak tree and indeed it's predecessors, the Salix trees that are now really beginning to enjoy themselves and are gaining height and breadth at a very healthy rate of knots. Will consolidate when photograph is safely in the Brownie. Beannachd leat, Hamish MacLeod. 1018

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.
Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.
Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.
Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.
