Amelanchier alnifolia Obelisk Snowy Mespilus Tree
An interesting fastigiate form of Amelanchier, Obelisk (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk') has a good, dense branch structure and a strikingly beautiful display of single white flowers during April with dark green leaves. Around Autumn time (depending on global warming) expect to see the green leaves fade to orange followed by clusters of small black to purple fruits. If the word black causes politically incorrect feelings then feel free to read it as ethnic minority fruits or African/European non-vegetables.

A small height tree, so expect a height of up to 4 metres after 10 years. It could go on to grow more or decide to stop where it is. Who knows what goes on with these trees.

The outstanding points of interest for our Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk' is that it will tolerate wet conditions which means damp soil not standing water. So if the local water polo team are working out on your garden then you can safely say you have wet soil.....and possibly no lock on your garden gate.

Getting The Best From Your Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk'
Prune hard after flowering to promote new growth for the next season. To the one or three hard-line extremist gardeners out there, hard pruning DOES NOT mean cutting it a couple of centimetres from ground level!

Plant in acid soil. Tipping the contents of your car batteries onto your garden does not make acid soil.

Tolerant of shade. This does not mean you can grow it in a submarine, coal mine or hardened nuclear bunker. It means if it has access to some sunlight, it should be ok.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

Alan, As the stern overseer of the garden I supervised the planting of our recent purchase by the resident husband. He did a sterling job and has tended it assiduously since planting. I inspected it earlier today and it is thriving, with several new leaf buds forming. As he has done so well he has now been elevated to Garden Dogsbody status. He's thrilled with the promotion. For the record, we also bought several Snowberries from you a couple of years ago and all are doing well with fat white berries weighing down the branches. Many thanks for the quality of the goods and we will no doubt be in touch when another shrub or tree takes my fancy. Janet 0917

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.

Mildew Issues
Mildew with young Amelanchier trees is a common problem. This does not affect the health of the tree, just the leaves and is a cosmetic problem.
