Dwarf Weeping Willow Salix Pendula Kilmarnock
An attractive small Pussy Willow tree (Salix caprea 'Kilarnock') is ideally suited for planting in a small garden or keeping in a large pot on a patio. An absolute delight in spring when very little else is in blossom, the branches of this tree are covered with large, fluffy, silver-coloured catkins that are studded with golden anthers (pussy willows). An Ideal choice for tubs or patios. Expect a final height of 2.5m (8ft 4in).
As with most weeping trees, you can determine final height by allowing the tree to grow to the height you require and then cut the main trunk/stem. If you are going to restrict growth by keeping it in the pot and then planting it, you need to remember to feed every year. The larger the pot, the larger the tree will grow.
Dwarf Weeping Willow Salix Pendula Kilmarnock Options
We usually have several options available in terms of height, age and form. The ones we currently have in stock will be listed in the options choices above but generally, they are as follows:
80cm+: Roughly 80cm clear stem plus the foliage on top so around 100cm in total. 4-7L pot.
90-120: 5-10L pot, quarter standard.
120cm: Roughly 120cm clear stem not including the foliage on top. 9-12L pot
125+: Roughly 120cm clear stem not including foliage on top. 15-18L pot. A season or two older than the 120cm option.
150+ : 150+cm tall, 12-15L pot, Half Standard.
(HS) 6-8cm: 12-18L pot, older and more established than previous options. Half Standard, around 80cm clear stem plus foliage head on top, good for pots and small plots. Will have larger/more established foliage compared to the previous option.
(HS)8-10cm: 15-20L pot, older and more established than (HS) 6-8cm. Half Standard, around 80cm clear stem plus foliage head on top, good for pots and small plots. Will have larger/more established foliage compared to the previous option.
Girth 8-10cm: 18-30L pot. Around 180cm clear stem plus foliage head on top
*Heights/pot sizes are given as a very rough guideline and can have considerable variation based on species and supplier (each nursery experiences different growing conditions) It may even have been pruned before being sent out so we can only guarantee girth.
Once a mature Dwarf Weeping Willow Salix Pendula Kilmarnock is around 4 years old then girth is the best measure of value for money. For every girth measurement increment e.g. 6-8cm to 8-10cm, the canopy will be wider, stronger, bushier and the root system larger as it has experienced 12-18 months growth. You can notice larger root systems with potted versions because the pot size increases with maturity. As a very general rule, each one cm girth measurement represents around 30cm growth but this doesn't apply to slow-growing trees and weeping trees such as this.
Rootball means it will not come in a pot but will have the roots wrapped which you need to remove before planting and are available for delivery only between November and March. If listed in a pot, they are available to purchase and plant all year round.
Standard and Half Standard means lollipop shape. Industry definitions mean Half Standard have around 80-150cm clear stem and Standard around 180cm or more. Half Standards will usually be quite smaller than their standard equivalent girth size and more suited for pots and small plots.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.
Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.
Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.
Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.
